Wes Leonard dies: basketball player from high school collapsed after winning move
Western Michigan high school basketball player collapsed in court and then he died to make the game-winning shot against the cap of his team's perfect season.
Fennville High School basketball player Wes Leonard, 16, died late on Thursday, Dutch hospital spokeswoman Deb Patterson said. Cause of death has not yet been determined.
"It is difficult to assimilate," teammate Shane Leonard Bale, told The Holland Sentinel. "It's like someone in your family, you know?"
Paramedics performed CPR, first Leonard was pronounced dead at the hospital, said Patterson.
Leonard scored the winning layup in a 57-55 victory in overtime on Bridgman to cap 20-0 season of Fennville. He fell to the ground after teammates and the fans stormed the field.
"Of course, amid the celebration, I think shocking is just the word" Superintendent Fennville Dirk Weeldreyer said the paper before ambulance Leonard left school.
Leonard was also a quarterback for the football team in high school.
It is the second athlete to die in Fennville 14 months. Wrestler Nathaniel Hernandez died in January 2010 after suffering a seizure at home after participating in a wrestling match in high school. He was 14 years
In an interview with the Sentinel in Tuesday's practice, spoke Fennville coach Ryan Klingler how Leonard was a great effort to succeed, and he looked bigger picture. "
"That's what makes it a little differently. It takes care of your body better than anyone, probably have never driven," said Klingler. "He hung out on his own in the weight room. There is a bit special."
Fennville is about 200 miles west of Detroit.
